Moscow City: overview of the international business center

Москва-Сити

MIBC Moscow City is the largest business, cultural and architectural center of global significance, uniting the interests of Russian and foreign companies. The business center includes a multifunctional complex connecting everything necessary for work, recreation and entertainment. The architecture of the skyscrapers reflects the style of high-tech and neo-constructivism.

From the dizzying height of the observation deck, the view of the center and other high-rise buildings opened up.

The idea of creating

The idea of creating an international business center in Moscow emerged in the early 90s. Architect B. Thor proposed the project to Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who drew inspiration from the Wall Street business district in New York and Canary Wharf in London. They decided to build it on the site of a former January near Expocentre and the World Trade Center. Work began in 1998, and continues today, but this one is already a significant part of the work: it is a bridge over the Moscow River “Bagration”, the shopping center and most of the towers.

Historically, 100 hectares of industrial land near Presnenskaya Embankment attracted the attention of leading architects for 30 years and changed the fate of Moscow.

The location of the green park was occupied by Afimall, one of the largest building elements in the center in terms of area, and the actions of the architects who created the remaining towers were dictated not only by their own ideas, but also by the plans of their clients.

As a result, the idea of comprehensive development of the neighborhood failed. In addition, the communications and throughput capacity, which were first introduced into the territory of the city of Moscow and were 1.5 times higher than announced, turned out to be insufficient for the new project.

This is not one of the districts of the city, the architects actually created a city within the city, which is arranged not only horizontally but also vertically, and you can move from one zone to another just by taking an elevator or going from one building to another.

In 1992, the City Company was established, which is still in charge of the management and development of the MIBC territory. In 1995, the project was frozen for more than 10 years due to lack of investment. In 2003 the project started to attract investors again and has been developing ever since. Today, most of the properties in Moscow have already been built and are actively looking for buyers and tenants.

Architectural concept

In the early 90s, an ambitious project by architect Boris Tore was realized to create a new business district in the capital with many towers designed in an unusual for Moscow architectural style, which perfectly combined the desire for development and modernity.

Only then it was assumed that the state would take over the financing of the project, and only a team of creative ideas and architects would be needed. At the same time, the first version of the architectural solution was born: the territory of the city of Moscow was divided into 20 parts united into a central park, and all the skyscrapers were arranged around the park in the shape of a horseshoe. According to his initial concept, the number of storeys of skyscrapers in the MIBC was to develop in a spiral, closing in on the simple in shape and the tallest tower “Russia”. And the building near the embankment was supposed to offer a view of the river for people living and working on the upper floors of the second line towers.

But reality made its own adjustments to the architects’ plans. Financing of the project in the new reality was transferred from the state to investors, each of whom realized their own ambitions and vision of the project. Many architects from all over the world participated in the projects, including the world famous Eric van Egeraat, and the business theme of the neighborhood was retained, but externally it was completely changed.
