Krasnaya Roza business center has preserved the architecture of the second half of the 19th century, impeccable red brick and elegant entrance groups. At the same time, the loft aesthetics is complemented by modern panoramic glazing, thanks to which the office remains bright even when using only natural light sources. All business centers in the business district are named after Russian traders and patrons, which emphasizes the building’s history.
History of the “Red Rose”
The silk factory was founded in 1875 by Frenchman Claudius Osipovich (Claude-Marie) Giraud. The mill is a joint-stock company “C. O. Giraud Sons”. By 1879, 180 machine tools and steam engines had been installed. In the 1880s and ’90s, the factory was rebuilt and greatly expanded. In 1885 and 1896, the company was granted the right to place the national emblem on its signs, advertisements, and other products.
In 1905, the factory had a group in contact with the Moscow Committee of the RSDLP; at the same time, the Union in Defense of its Labor was founded, and workers participated in the political strike of the 1905 Revolution. They were joined by 3 more strikes before 1917. The silk factory workers participated in the October Revolution of 1917.
After the revolution, in May 1919 by the decree of the Soviet government the factory “K. O. Giro Sons” was nationalized and since 1929 the factory published the newspaper “Chelnok”. In 1930 the enterprise was renamed the factory “Red Rose” after Rosa Luxemburg. Until 1941 the enterprise learned to produce artificial silk.
In 1975 the plant was awarded the Order of October Revolution. In the last years of its existence it was a part of the association Rospromshelk. It was closed in the late 1990s.
Redevelopment of business quarter
After the collapse of the USSR, the reliable buildings of the factory became economically interesting non-industrial objects. In the 1990s the investment company Nerl started the process of decommissioning, and in 2003 the architectural studio of Sergey Kiselev developed an urban planning concept for the reorganization of the territory. CJSC Krasnaya Roza 1875 (a structure of KR-Properties) became the investor, and Stroyproekt became the customer.
First tenants
Redevelopment of Krasnaya Rosa went through several stages. It was one of the first loft quarters in Moscow, and in 2004 the first tenants of the buildings arrived: French companies Lafarge, Publicis Groupe, British companies Knight Frank and AstraZeneca, and Finnish M-Real. Tenants began to arrive one after another.
Among the biggest tenants:
Lafarge are some of the largest cement and concrete producers in Russia.
Yandex is a multinational company in the information technology industry, with an Internet search engine of the same name, an Internet portal and web services in several countries.
Urban planning concept of the quarter
The owners of Krasnaya Rosa developed the urban planning concept together with the architectural bureau Kiselev & Partners. It was necessary to determine what in the neighborhood should be built anew.
At another site – Danilovskaya Manufactory it was decided to renovate historical buildings only, and the new construction was moved to a distant territory adjacent to the quarter. At the same time at Krasnaya Roza the preservation of the historical heritage was not limited to that.
For a large world-class business, which may appear in the quarter, modern products with a large underground parking lot were needed. As a result, new buildings were constructed and the business district now has two underground parking lots providing a large number of parking spaces.
The next stage was the restoration of the Stroganov Building, where the owners of Red Rose own headquarters and the entire head office is located. Previously, part of this building was occupied by the gaming company “Gameland”, and it was here that one of the first attics was located.
Along with the renovation and the arrival of the first tenants, Artplay developed on the territory of the quarter, which took over the old factory building “Demidov”, which was in a deplorable condition at the time.
Art Quarter helped to develop the Red Rose Quarter: architects, artists, designers, manufacturers and suppliers of various materials came to Artplay. It turned out to be a great creative space.
By 2008, one wing of the quarter was being developed and the Stroganov building was launched, the art community was gathering in Artplay, and the first cafes and restaurants were already operating on the territory. On the whole, it brought significant success that Yandex came to the territory of the quarter and organized its headquarters here.
The coming of Yandex
In 2008, the deal was concluded. Before that, Yandex was located in the old office on Yauzskaya Embankment, next to the Kristall factory.
It was important for Yandex to develop the historical direction of the territory.
The Savin building was entirely occupied by the bank. The infrastructure works as it should: if someone closes down, someone else instantly takes his place.
“Demidov” is now filling up very successfully. It was rebuilt into a modern class A business center, and according to the old tradition, it now houses showrooms with designer furniture and the Kraski gallery. That’s why they chose this building, because the place is “mothballed” – ArtPlay used to sit there, but then the creative space could be given three stars, now it’s five.
The same building of the estate, and now the Mamontov building, eventually became the headquarters of the Kalashnikov Concern. The Giraud Gallery is used for events.
This is one of the first projects in Moscow, where the access to business districts, which grew up on the place of industrial zones, was opened. Previously, such areas were always fenced off and it was impossible to just walk in. And it worked.
Now there is housing nearby, and people are happy to come and visit Krasnaya Roza not only on weekdays, but also from Friday evening onwards: to cafes and restaurants, to business meetings and just to take a walk.
Everything is uncovered, and there is an opportunity to get inside the complex, to walk along the boulevard inside the neighborhood. And here a very pleasant environment has developed, the eye rests. Seven years ago, when there was no “My Street” program yet, we came to the city with a proposal to improve Timur Frunze and Leo Tolstoy streets on our own.
